B．长句难句

1．Claire didn't want the Robot in her house，especially as her husband would be absent for three weeks， but Larry persuaded her that the robot wouldn't harm her or allow her to be harmed．

    Claire不愿把这个机器人放在家里，尤其是这三个星期丈夫将不在家，但是Larry说服她说：机器人决不会伤害她或让她受到伤害。

    but连接两个具有转折意义的并列句，是并列连词；

    as引导的原因状语从句在but前面的句子中作原因状语，补充说明她不愿让机器人呆在家里的原因；

    especially adv．尤其，特别是。常用于正式文体中，放在介词短语或连词前面尤其如此。例如：

    h is always difficult being in a foreign country， especially if you don't speak the language．

    在别国总是很难，特别是如果你又不会说这个国家的语言。

    It is a common word，especially in spoken English.

    这个词在英语口语中尤为常见。

    2．She told him how she and her borne weren't elegant enough for someone like Larry who want to improve his social position．

    她告诉他，对于像Larry那种想提高自己社会地位的人而言，她和她家是如此得不体面。

    how引导的从句作told的直接宾语；enough是副词，放在它所修饰的形容词或副词后面，常与不定式短语或for短语连用，意思是“太……以至于……”。例如：

    I am fool enough to believe him．

    我真够傻的．竟然相信了他。

    She is old enough to go to school．

    这女孩够上学的年龄了。

    3．Asimov had both an extraordinary imagination that give him the ability to explore future worlds and an amazing mind with which he searched for explanations of everything，in the present and the past．

    Asimov不但具有超乎寻常的想你力让他能够探索未来世界，而且还有超人的智慧让他寻求对今天和过去一切事物的解释。

    had在句中的宾语有imagination和mind，它们分别带了自己的定语从句。that引导的从句修饰imagination ; which引导的从句修饰mind。

    search for寻找，寻求，意义等于look for．例如：

    They are searching for the lost camels．

    他们正在寻找丢失的骆驼。

    The police were searching the forest for the prisoner.

    警察在搜查树林寻找那个囚犯。

    4．It was when Asimov was eleven years old that his talent for writing became obvious．

    就在Asimov 11岁的时候，他的写作天赋才显现出来。

    这是个强调句。强调的是when引导的时间状语。所以用that引导。例如：

    It was not until he came back that I went to bed．

    直到他回来我才上床睡觉。

    It was for this reason that l came late．

    就因为这个原因我才迟到的．
